Crystal Butterfly
Supplies
1 40mm by 48mm butterfly screen with pin back
1 15mm filigree flower
1 8mm clear rhinestone
1 8mm rhinestone setting with four bottom holes
1 10mm by 5mm sapphire octagon rhinestones
1 10mm by 5mm octagon rhinestone setting with two bottom holes
10 7mm molded sapphire glass flowers with shank style backs
28 6mm clear crystals
28 2" head pins
28 sapphire seed beads
31" 26 gauge wire
1) Start by setting the two rhinestones in their settings and closing the prongs down.
(Fig 1)
2) Cut two 3" pieces of 26 gauge wire and run them through the two holes on the back of the round rhinestone setting. (fig2)
3) Bend the wires towards the back of the round rhinestone. Now run the four pieces of wire back through the top of the filigree flower. (fig 3)
4) Once you have run the wires through the filigree flower you will then run them through the top center of the butterfly. Turn the piece over and twist the wires tight.
(fig 4)
5) Cut another 3" piece of 26 gauge wire and run it through the two holes on the bottom of the octagon rhinestone setting. (fig 5)
6) Take the two ends of wire from the octagon rhinestone setting and bend them away from the rhinestone. Run them through two holes placing the rhinestone vertical twoards the bottom center of the butterfly. Turn the piece over and twist the wires secure. If the wires are tight and you are sure the stones are where you want them you can go ahead and cut the wires about 3/8" and bend them towards the butterfly. (fig 6)
7) Take a 3" piece of 26 gauge wire and run it through the back of one of the 6mm flower beads. (fig 7)
8)Take both ends of the wire and bend them towards the back of the flower. Place the two ends of wire through two holes towards the top of the butterfly next to the round rhiestone. Turn the piece over and twist the wires tight. Continue this process until you have five flowers on one side of the butterfly. It is best of wait until you have all of your flowers secured before cutting the wires. Once all of the flowers are in place and secure you can go back and cut the wires about 3/8" and bend the towards the butterfly. (fig 8)
9) Contine step 8 on the other side of the butterfly. You should end up with five flower beads on each side of the butterfly.(fig 9)
10) Take two 2" head pins and first place a seed bead on each of them and then add a 6mm crystal. (fig 10)
11) Now run each of the two head pins with the beads on them trough a hole in the screen. Turn the piece over and twist the two head pins together. Note: the thinner the head pins are the easier they will be to work with. I used standard head pins with this piece and they are a little hard to work with. If you can tollerate all of the pins sticking out for the time being it is best to leave them until you have all of your beads in place. (fig 11)
12) Continue taking two head pins at a time and adding them to the butterfly. You should have fourteen crystals on each side. Don't worry about how the back looks right now. You can go back and clean up the wires when you have added all the beads. (fig 12)
13)Once you have fourteen crystals on both sides of the butterfly you can turn it over and tighten the wires (head pins). You need to make sure you have several very good twists before you try to cut them. After they are all secure cut the head pins to about 3/8" and then bend them toward the butterfly. Take the back side of the butterfly and place it on the screen. You will have a lot of wire built up so you may have the push hard to get it flush with the screen. Once you have the back place on the screen use your needle nose pliers to close the prongs down onto the screen. (fig 13)
14) Your butterfly brooch should look something like this. (fig 14)
