Bakelite is one of the first plastics invented in 1907 by chemist Leo Baekeland. In the 1930's and 1940's the Catalin Company created marbled and translucent Bakelite that was used to make jewelry and household items. Bakelite is often used as a term to denote early plastics and vintage Bakelite jewelry is highly collectible.
